Foundation year degrees: the route into university nobody told you about

5 min read · Dream Wise Education

If you've ever been told university isn't for you because you don't have the right qualifications, this is the article that changes that. Foundation year degrees are one of the most useful routes into higher education — and hardly anyone explains them properly.

What is a foundation year?

A foundation year is a built-in first year at the start of a degree. It gets you ready for undergraduate study — building your academic skills and subject knowledge — and then you continue straight into the full honours degree. So a normal three-year degree becomes four years with the foundation year included.

Why it matters: you can start with no qualifications

This is the key point. Foundation year courses are designed for people without A-levels or traditional qualifications. Instead of exam grades, they typically assess you through an interview or a short task. That means if you left school without qualifications, or studied a long time ago, this route is open to you.

"No qualifications" does not mean "no university." Foundation year and CertHE courses exist precisely for people who don't have the traditional entry requirements.

Foundation year vs foundation degree — don't get them confused

They sound similar but they're different:

Both are useful; which suits you depends on your goals. We'll explain the difference for your specific situation.

Do employers mind?

No. When you finish, you hold the same honours degree as someone who didn't do a foundation year — the foundation year simply doesn't appear as a separate lesser qualification on your final degree. Employers see the degree, not the route you took to get there.

Who is it good for?

Is it funded?

Yes — foundation year degrees are eligible for Student Finance in the same way as standard degrees, including both the tuition fee loan and the maintenance loan for eligible students. That means you can access this route without paying upfront.

The bottom line

Foundation year degrees quietly solve the single biggest barrier people face: not having the "right" qualifications. If that's been holding you back, it may be the exact route you've been looking for — and we can show you which courses you'd be eligible for, free.
