Questions, answered

Everything students ask us first

How much Student Finance can I get?
For 2026/27 you can borrow up to Β£9,790 a year to cover tuition (paid direct to the university), plus a maintenance loan of up to Β£14,135 a year if you live away from home in London β€” less if you live with parents or study outside London. The exact figure depends on your household income and changes each year, so always confirm on gov.uk. We calculate your personal estimate for free in your first consultation.
Can I go to university with no qualifications?
Yes. Foundation year degrees and CertHE courses are designed exactly for this β€” they accept applicants based on an interview or a short assessment rather than A-levels. Many of our students left school years ago with no formal qualifications and are now completing honours degrees.
Am I too old to become a student?
There's no upper age limit for university or for Student Finance tuition fee loans. Mature students (21+) make up a large share of UK undergraduates, and many courses offer evening, weekend and blended timetables built around work and family life.
Can I get Student Finance if I already have a degree?
Usually a first degree uses up standard funding, but there are important exceptions β€” including some healthcare, teaching and STEM courses, top-up degrees, and cases involving Compelling Personal Reasons. This is one of the most misunderstood areas of Student Finance; tell us your history and we'll confirm exactly what you're entitled to.
Can I keep working while I study?
Yes β€” most of our students do. We specialise in matching working professionals with evening, weekend and blended courses, and working doesn't stop you receiving a maintenance loan (entitlement is based on household income, assessed by Student Finance England).
When do I have to repay the loan?
Under Plan 5, you repay 9% of anything you earn above Β£25,000 a year, taken automatically through payroll like tax. Earn less and you pay nothing. Any remaining balance is written off after 40 years. It works more like a graduate contribution than a conventional debt.
Can I work while getting Student Finance?
Yes. There's no limit on how much you can work while studying, and having a job doesn't stop you receiving a tuition fee loan or a maintenance loan. In fact, most of our students work while they study, which is exactly why we focus on evening, weekend and blended courses. The one thing to be aware of is how income is assessed β€” see the next two questions.
How much can I earn before Student Finance is affected?
Your own earnings from a part-time job do not reduce your loan β€” you can earn as much as you like from working alongside your course. The maintenance loan is means-tested on household income, which for most students means their parents' income (if you're under 25 and financially dependent) or a partner's income (if you're older or independent). So it's the household assessment that affects the maintenance amount, not your own wages from a job. We'll work out exactly how you'd be assessed, for free.
Do I need to tell Student Finance about my job?
You don't need to declare a part-time job you take during your studies β€” your own term-time earnings aren't part of the assessment. What Student Finance asks about is household income for the means-tested maintenance loan: your parents' income if you're assessed as dependent, or your (and any partner's) income if you're independent. If you're unsure which applies to you, that's one of the first things we'll clarify in your free consultation.
How much does Dream Wise charge?
Nothing. Our advice, course matching, university application support and full Student Finance England application service are free for students. We're paid by partner institutions when students enrol, which is standard practice in UK education recruitment β€” and it never affects the honesty of our advice.
When should I apply for September 2026?
As early as possible β€” popular foundation year courses fill quickly, and Student Finance applications are best submitted by early summer to guarantee your money arrives for the first term. Book a free consultation now and we'll build your timeline.
