Question 1

What does Dream Wise Education actually do?

Accepted Answer

We're an independent education consultancy. We help UK residents choose the right university course, apply for their place, and complete their Student Finance England application — all free for the student. Think of us as a guide who's done it hundreds of times before.

Question 2

Is your service really free?

Accepted Answer

Yes, completely. We're paid by partner institutions when a student enrols, which is standard practice in UK education recruitment. You never pay us, and it doesn't change the honesty of our advice — if a course isn't right for you, we'll say so.

Question 3

How do I get started?

Accepted Answer

Just message us on WhatsApp, call, or book a free consultation through the website. We'll ask about your goals, situation and any qualifications, then map out your options. No commitment required.

Question 4

How quickly will you get back to me?

Accepted Answer

Usually within a few hours during our working hours, and by the next working period otherwise. WhatsApp is the fastest way to reach us.

Question 5

Do I need to know what I want to study already?

Accepted Answer

Not at all. Plenty of people come to us saying "I'm not sure yet" — that's completely fine. Helping you work out the right direction is part of what we do.

Question 6

Can you help if I've been out of education for years?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely — many of our students are returning after a long break. There are courses and routes designed specifically for people restarting their education, and we'll match you to them.

Question 7

Where are you based?

Accepted Answer

We're based in Ilford, London, and we help students across England. You can deal with us entirely by phone and WhatsApp, or come into the office if you prefer.

Question 8

Do you charge for the consultation?

Accepted Answer

No. The consultation is free, with no obligation to proceed.

Question 9

What is Student Finance England?

Accepted Answer

It's the government body that funds higher education for eligible students in England. For most people it provides a tuition fee loan (which pays your course fees) and a maintenance loan (which helps with living costs).

Question 10

How much can I get for tuition?

Accepted Answer

For 2026/27, the tuition fee loan covers course fees up to a maximum set by government each year. It's paid directly to your university, so you never handle it. Figures change annually — always confirm the current amount at gov.uk/student-finance.

Question 11

How much maintenance loan can I get?

Accepted Answer

It depends on where you live and study and on your household income. The highest amounts are for students living away from home in London; less if you live with parents or study elsewhere. We'll calculate your personal estimate for free.

Question 12

Do I have to pay anything upfront?

Accepted Answer

No. Tuition is paid directly to your university by Student Finance, and your maintenance loan is paid to you. There's no upfront cost to start your course.

Question 13

When is the maintenance loan paid?

Accepted Answer

In three instalments across the year, usually at the start of each term, straight into your bank account.

Question 14

Is the maintenance loan based on my income or my parents'?

Accepted Answer

It's based on household income. If you're young and financially dependent, that usually means your parents' income. If you're older or independent, it's your own (and any partner's) income.

Question 15

What's the difference between the tuition loan and maintenance loan?

Accepted Answer

The tuition fee loan pays your course fees directly to the university. The maintenance loan is separate money paid to you for living costs like rent and bills. Most full-time students can apply for both.

Question 16

Can you help me fill in the Student Finance application?

Accepted Answer

Yes — this is one of the main things we do. We complete the whole application with you, check everything before it's submitted, and make sure nothing gets delayed or rejected.

Question 17

What documents do I need for Student Finance?

Accepted Answer

Usually a passport (or birth certificate plus ID), National Insurance number, bank details, evidence of immigration status if relevant, and household income evidence if you want the means-tested maintenance loan. Our free checklist walks you through it.

Question 18

How long does a Student Finance application take?

Accepted Answer

Allow around six to eight weeks to be safe, especially in the busy summer period. Applying early is the best way to ensure funding is ready for your first term.

Question 19

Does Student Finance affect my benefits?

Accepted Answer

It can interact with some means-tested benefits in complex ways, depending on your situation. This is worth getting personalised advice on — we can point you in the right direction.

Question 20

Can I get extra help if I have children or a disability?

Accepted Answer

There are additional grants and allowances for students with children, dependants, or disabilities — for example childcare grants and Disabled Students' Allowance. We'll check what you might be entitled to.

Question 21

What if my application is rejected?

Accepted Answer

Rejections are usually about evidence or status, not eligibility itself, and can often be resolved. We help you understand the reason, provide the right documents, and reapply or appeal where appropriate.

Question 22

Can I apply for Student Finance before I have a confirmed place?

Accepted Answer

Yes. You don't need a confirmed offer to start your application, and applying early is encouraged so your funding is ready in time.

Question 23

Who qualifies for Student Finance?

Accepted Answer

Eligibility comes down to three things: your course, your residency and immigration status, and your previous study. Most UK residents on an eligible course qualify — we'll confirm your exact situation for free.

Question 24

I'm a British citizen — am I eligible?

Accepted Answer

British citizens ordinarily resident in England who meet the three-year residency rule are typically eligible. We'll confirm the details for your circumstances.

Question 25

I have settled status / Indefinite Leave to Remain — can I apply?

Accepted Answer

Usually yes, on the same basis as citizens, provided you meet the residency requirements. Status is the area applications most often go wrong, so we always check it first.

Question 26

I'm an EU citizen — do I still qualify?

Accepted Answer

The rules changed after Brexit. Those with settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme may qualify, depending on their specific status and residency. We'll verify your position.

Question 27

What is the three-year residency rule?

Accepted Answer

Broadly, to qualify for a tuition fee loan you need to have lived in the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man for three years before your course starts, and be ordinarily resident in England on the first day. Exceptions apply for certain groups.

Question 28

Can refugees or people with humanitarian protection get Student Finance?

Accepted Answer

There are specific routes for refugees and people with certain forms of humanitarian or other protection. Eligibility depends on your exact status — tell us and we'll check.

Question 29

Can I get funding for a second degree?

Accepted Answer

Usually a first degree uses your standard entitlement, but there are important exceptions — certain healthcare, teaching and STEM subjects, top-up degrees, and Compelling Personal Reasons. Tell us your history and we'll confirm.

Question 30

What are Compelling Personal Reasons (CPR)?

Accepted Answer

If a previous course was left incomplete due to illness or other serious circumstances, Student Finance may grant extra funded years. It's assessed case by case.

Question 31

I started a course before but didn't finish — can I still get funding?

Accepted Answer

Possibly. Previous study affects entitlement, but incomplete courses — especially those left for genuine personal reasons — may not use up your funding. Always tell us your full study history.

Question 32

Is there an age limit for Student Finance?

Accepted Answer

There's no upper age limit for the tuition fee loan. Maintenance loans have some age-related considerations we'll check, but many students in their 30s, 40s and beyond are fully funded.

Question 33

Can part-time students get funding?

Accepted Answer

Part-time students can apply for a tuition fee loan, and if the course is intensive enough, may also qualify for a maintenance loan. It depends on the course intensity.

Question 34

Can distance-learning students get funding?

Accepted Answer

Some distance-learning and online courses attract tuition support, and in certain cases maintenance support. Eligibility depends on the course and its intensity — we'll check the specific course.

Question 35

Am I too old to go to university?

Accepted Answer

No. There's no upper age limit for university or for the tuition fee loan. Mature students make up a large share of UK undergraduates, and many courses are built around work and family life.

Question 36

Can I work while getting Student Finance?

Accepted Answer

Yes — there's no limit on how much you can work while studying, and having a job doesn't stop you receiving a tuition or maintenance loan. Most of our students work while they study.

Question 37

How much can I earn before Student Finance is affected?

Accepted Answer

Your own earnings from a part-time job do not reduce your loan — you can earn as much as you like. The maintenance loan is means-tested on household income (parents' or a partner's), not on wages you earn while studying.

Question 38

Do I need to tell Student Finance about my job?

Accepted Answer

You don't declare a part-time job you take during your studies — your own term-time earnings aren't part of the assessment. What's assessed is household income for the means-tested maintenance loan.

Question 39

Are there courses that fit around a full-time job?

Accepted Answer

Yes — we specialise in matching working people with evening, weekend and blended courses so you can earn a degree without giving up your job.

Question 40

I'm a parent — can I still study?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. Many of our students are parents. There are flexible course timetables, and additional support like childcare grants may be available. We'll help you make it work.

Question 41

Will studying affect my Universal Credit or other benefits?

Accepted Answer

It can, depending on your circumstances and the type of study. This needs personalised advice — we can point you in the right direction so you go in with your eyes open.

Question 42

As a mature student, do I need A-levels?

Accepted Answer

Not necessarily. Foundation year and access routes assess mature applicants on interview or experience rather than A-levels, and your work and life experience counts in your favour.

Question 43

Will universities take me seriously as an older applicant?

Accepted Answer

Yes — universities value mature students, who often bring focus, real-world experience and strong motivation. Your background is a strength, not a disadvantage.

Question 44

Can I study if English isn't my first language?

Accepted Answer

Yes, though courses usually ask for a certain level of English. Short academic English courses can help you get study-ready, and we'll advise on what a given course requires.

Question 45

What is a foundation year?

Accepted Answer

A foundation year is a built-in first year that prepares you for a degree. It lets you start an honours degree with no prior qualifications, then continue straight into the full course.

Question 46

Can I really go to university with no qualifications?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Foundation year degrees and CertHE courses are designed exactly for this — they accept applicants based on an interview or short assessment rather than A-levels.

Question 47

What's the difference between a foundation year and a foundation degree?

Accepted Answer

A foundation year is an extra year at the start of a full degree. A foundation degree is a standalone two-year qualification (like an HND) that you can later top up to a full degree. We'll explain which suits you.

Question 48

What is an HND?

Accepted Answer

A Higher National Diploma — a practical, career-focused qualification roughly equivalent to the first two years of a degree. You can top it up to a full honours degree with one more year.

Question 49

What is a CertHE?

Accepted Answer

A Certificate of Higher Education — a one-year university-level qualification, often used as a way into a degree or to test the water before committing to a full course.

Question 50

What subjects can I study?

Accepted Answer

We work across business, health and social care, computing and cyber security, construction, project management, psychology, digital marketing, events, and creative subjects like fashion and graphic design. See our Courses page for the full list.

Question 51

Can I top up my HND to a full degree?

Accepted Answer

Yes — a one-year 'top-up' converts an HND or foundation degree into a full honours degree. It's a popular, funded route.

Question 52

How long does a degree take?

Accepted Answer

A standard honours degree is three years, or four with a foundation year. HNDs are two years, and CertHE courses one year. Part-time study takes longer but spreads the workload.

Question 53

Do you offer online or distance courses?

Accepted Answer

Some of the courses we work with offer online or blended study. Tell us your preference and we'll find options that fit.

Question 54

Can I change course if I start and it's not right?

Accepted Answer

Often yes, though it depends on the institution and timing, and can affect your funding. Speak to us before making any change so we can protect your entitlement.

Question 55

Which course is right for me?

Accepted Answer

That's exactly what a free consultation is for. We look at your goals, schedule, and Student Finance eligibility, then shortlist courses that genuinely fit — not just whatever's available.

Question 56

Are the modules on your website the exact ones I'll study?

Accepted Answer

The modules on our site are indicative examples to show what a subject typically covers. Exact titles and content vary by institution and intake year — we'll confirm the specifics for any course you're interested in.

Question 57

What is UCAS?

Accepted Answer

UCAS is the online service most people use to apply to UK universities. You create an account, choose courses, write a personal statement, and submit — universities then respond with offers.

Question 58

Do I have to use UCAS?

Accepted Answer

Not always. Many foundation year, CertHE, HND and direct-entry courses can be applied to directly through the provider, often with a simpler process and later deadlines. We'll tell you which route applies.

Question 59

Can you help with my personal statement?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We help you structure and strengthen your personal statement so it reflects your genuine motivation and experience — especially valuable for mature applicants.

Question 60

What are UCAS points?

Accepted Answer

The UCAS Tariff turns qualifications like A-levels into points, and some courses ask for a minimum. But many routes we work with assess you on interview or experience instead, so you can apply even without tariff points.

Question 61

What if I have no formal qualifications for UCAS points?

Accepted Answer

'No UCAS points' does not mean 'no university'. Foundation year and access courses exist precisely for people without traditional qualifications, and assess you differently.

Question 62

When are the application deadlines?

Accepted Answer

Main UCAS deadlines fall in autumn/winter before a September start, but many providers accept later applications, and foundation/direct-entry courses often have later or rolling deadlines and extra intakes.

Question 63

How many courses can I apply to?

Accepted Answer

Through UCAS you can usually choose up to five courses at once. We'll help you build a sensible shortlist rather than applying at random.

Question 64

Who can write my reference?

Accepted Answer

Usually a teacher, tutor or employer. Mature students can often use a professional or academic reference. We'll advise on who's suitable.
