For a course starting in January 2027, you apply for Student Finance through the new Lifelong Learning Entitlement (LLE) service. GOV.UK says "you can apply from the end of October 2026" for courses starting on or after 1 January 2027. You need a new account, even if you already have a Student Finance England account, and you apply separately for each course.

When can you apply for January 2027?
GOV.UK: "You can apply from the end of October 2026 for courses and modules starting on or after 1 January 2027" (when to apply, GOV.UK). No exact day has been published, and we cannot see whether the live service is open today, so use the official link above to start. You do not need a confirmed offer from a university to apply. Do not wait until your course starts: GOV.UK says the deadline is the last day of the ninth month of your 12-month course or module year (for example, a 15 January 2027 start has a deadline of 30 September 2027), or your course end date if that comes first. Late applications after your course has started are possible but must still meet that deadline. For courses starting from 1 August 2027, GOV.UK says you can apply from spring 2027.
If your course starts before 1 January 2027 (for example a November 2026 intake), you do not use the LLE. You apply through the current 2026/27 Student Finance service instead.
Step by step: how to apply
- Check you need the LLE. Your course starts on or after 1 January 2027 and is at level 4 to 6 (such as a CertHE, HND, foundation degree, bachelor's degree, or a degree with a foundation year). GOV.UK warns that applying through the wrong service "could delay your application".
- Check you are eligible. You normally need to live in England and meet the nationality or residency rules, and be under 60 on the first day of your course for a Tuition Fee Loan (eligibility, GOV.UK).
- Create a new LLE account. GOV.UK: even if you already have a Student Finance England account, "you'll still need to create a new account".
- Check your balance. Your account shows an estimate of how much Tuition Fee Loan you can borrow, including what is left if you have studied before.
- Apply online for each course or module. One application per course or module.
- Send any proof asked for, such as proof of identity, and your household income details if you want more than the minimum Maintenance Loan.
- Reapply every year if your course lasts more than one year.
What to have ready
- Your passport or other ID
- Your National Insurance number and UK bank account details
- Your status details if you are not a British or Irish citizen (for example settled or pre-settled status)
- Your university, course name and the exact start date
- Dates of any previous university study, because funding you had before is taken off your entitlement
- Household income details if you apply for more than the minimum Maintenance Loan. If you are 25 or over, your parents' income is not counted (household income, GOV.UK)
Check the exact list on the application screens, as Student Finance England may ask for more.

How much can you get?
GOV.UK's overview says new learners get a Tuition Fee Loan entitlement of up to £39,160, the same as four years at the 2026 to 2027 maximum fee of £9,790 (LLE overview, GOV.UK). You must study at least 30 credits in a course year to qualify. A Maintenance Loan for living costs is separate and depends on your household income and where you live.
Who receives the money?
| Money | Paid to |
|---|---|
| Tuition Fee Loan | Your university or college, directly. You never handle it. |
| Maintenance Loan | Your own bank account, once your university confirms you have started. |
If anyone asks you to pass a loan payment on to a college, treat it as a scam.
Common mistakes that delay funding
- Signing in to an old Student Finance account instead of creating a new LLE account
- Waiting until the course has started to apply
- A course name or start date that does not match the university's records
- Not replying quickly when Student Finance England asks for evidence
Special cases
- Aged 60 or over: no Tuition Fee Loan for courses starting on or after 1 January 2027. A course starting before that date follows the older rules.
- Pre-settled status: GOV.UK says you "may only be eligible for a Tuition Fee Loan and not a Maintenance Loan".
- Returning after a break: if you were away less than 12 months your existing account stays open; 12 months or more and your previous application closes.
- Can't apply online: GOV.UK says to contact Student Finance England when applications open.

Quick answers
When can I apply for Student Finance for January 2027?
GOV.UK says applications for Lifelong Learning Entitlement funding open at the end of October 2026, for courses and modules starting on or after 1 January 2027. Apply as soon as they open.
Do I need a new Student Finance account for January 2027?
Yes. GOV.UK says you need to create a new account for LLE funding even if you already have a Student Finance England account.
Does the Student Finance money go to me or the university?
Your Tuition Fee Loan is paid directly to your university or college. Your Maintenance Loan for living costs is paid into your own bank account.
Do I apply once for the whole course?
No. You apply separately for each course or module, and if your course lasts more than a year you reapply for each year you want funding.
Can I apply if I am 60 or over?
For courses starting on or after 1 January 2027 you must be under 60 on the first day of your course to get a Tuition Fee Loan. If you are 60 or over you may still get help with living costs.
Do I need an offer to apply, and is there a deadline?
You do not need a confirmed offer to apply. GOV.UK says the deadline is the last day of the ninth month of your 12-month course or module year, or your course end date if that comes first. For a 15 January 2027 start, that is 30 September 2027.
