Is there a household income threshold for Student Finance?

Written by Israar Patel, Founder and British Council-certified UK education agent (certificate 118206), Dream Wise Education Ltd. · Last reviewed · 4 min read

There is no household income limit that stops you getting Student Finance in England. The tuition fee loan does not depend on income, and eligible students can get a basic maintenance loan whatever their household income; income only affects how much extra maintenance loan you get on top.

What is income-assessed and what is not

The income levels and loan amounts are set by the government and change every year. Use the student finance calculator on gov.uk for the current figures.

Whose income counts

"Household income" depends on how Student Finance England classes you:

See our guide to independent student status for who qualifies.

Which year's income is used

Student Finance England normally looks at income from a previous tax year, not what you earn today. If your household income has fallen substantially since then, you can ask for a current year income assessment so the lower figure is used. You will be asked for evidence.

Do you have to give income details?

No. You can apply for the tuition fee loan and the basic maintenance loan without them. You only need to provide household income details if you want to be considered for the extra, income-assessed part.

How Dream Wise can help

We explain which income details your application will ask for and help you gather the right evidence, so nothing is sent late or in the wrong format. Our guidance is free to students. Student Finance England decides eligibility and amounts; we cannot tell you what you will receive.

Quick answers

Is the tuition fee loan means-tested?

No. The tuition fee loan in England does not depend on your household income. Only part of the maintenance loan is income-assessed.

Does my partner's income count?

If you are assessed as an independent student and live with a husband, wife, civil partner or partner, their income is normally included in your household income.

What if our income has dropped this year?

You can ask Student Finance England for a current year income assessment if your household income has fallen substantially compared with the tax year they would normally use. Evidence is required.

Can Dream Wise tell me how much I will get?

No. Student Finance England decides amounts. The student finance calculator on gov.uk gives an estimate using the current figures.
