The PN1 is Student Finance England's paper application form for new full-time students in the 2026/27 academic year. Most people apply online instead. If your course starts on or after 1 January 2027, you usually do not use the PN1 at all: you apply through the new Lifelong Learning Entitlement with a new online account.

What is the PN1 form?
PN1 is the name Student Finance England (SFE) gives to its application form for new students who want a Tuition Fee Loan and a Maintenance Loan. The 2026/27 version is on gov.uk as a PDF form, with separate notes to help you fill it in. The notes say you can also apply online, and for most people online is quicker. You can find every official form with the gov.uk student finance form finder.
When people search for "SFE application" or "PN1", they usually mean the same thing: the application for Student Finance as a new student. The rest of this page explains which route applies to you.
Who should use the PN1?
The 2026/27 PN1 notes say the form is for a new student starting, among others:
- a full-time course of higher education, including a sandwich course
- a full-time Initial Teacher Training course
- a full-time distance learning course (for reasons not related to disability, this only covers a Tuition Fee Loan and Disabled Students' Allowance)
- a degree in nursing, midwifery or an allied health profession, or certain other health-related courses
- a qualifying level 4 or 5 course with Higher Technical Qualification (HTQ) approval
Do not use it if you normally live in Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man. You apply to the funding body for where you live instead.
Starting in January 2027? You probably need the LLE, not the PN1
This is the most important point on this page. The PN1 notes say that if your course starts on or after 1 January 2027, you should only complete the PN1 if one of these applies:
- you are a direct entrant going into year 2 or later of a course that started before 1 January 2027
- you are continuing a course you started in a previous academic year and applying for funding for it for the first time
- you are starting a Master's (Part 2) that leads to qualification as an architect
- you are switching to full-time study on a course that started before 1 January 2027, after studying it part-time
If none of those apply and your course starts from 1 January 2027, you apply for Lifelong Learning Entitlement (LLE) funding. Gov.uk says applications open at the end of October 2026, and you need to create a new account for LLE funding even if you already have a Student Finance England account. If you want to apply using a paper form for LLE funding, gov.uk says to contact Student Finance England. Read how the Lifelong Learning Entitlement works for the new rules.
What to have ready before you start
Whether you use the PN1 or apply online, the same information comes up. Have these ready:
- Your National Insurance number. The PN1 notes say that if you do not give it, your loan payments are held back until it is sorted.
- Identity details. Your UK passport details, or a photocopy of your UK birth or adoption certificate if your passport has expired or you do not have one. Non-UK nationals give identity and status information in a separate section.
- Evidence of your status, if you are not a UK or Irish national.
- Your course and university or college details, exactly as the university has them.
- Your bank account details, for the Maintenance Loan.
- Household income details, if you want more than the minimum Maintenance Loan or extra grants. See how household income is assessed.
Common mistakes that delay a PN1 or online application
- Using the wrong route. Filling in a PN1 for a course that starts from January 2027 when you should be applying through the LLE.
- Leaving the National Insurance number blank when you have one.
- Sending the wrong kind of evidence. The notes say when they need originals and when a photocopy is fine. Originals must be the version the issuing organisation gave you, and can take up to 20 working days to process.
- Giving a temporary or PO Box address. Letters and returned documents can need a signature, so use a secure address.
- Applying while behind on a previous student loan. The notes say to sort this out first.
- Not declaring previous study, or getting residency details wrong. Both are common reasons for follow-up questions.
How long does it take?
Gov.uk says it takes 4 weeks to process an application, and you get an email when your account shows what you will get. Missing evidence makes it longer, so send everything asked for the first time. For courses and modules starting between 1 January and 31 July 2027 under the LLE, you must apply by 30 September 2027, or by your course end date if that is sooner. Apply well before your course starts so your money is ready.
